Paul Day
Marine Scientist
Paul Day is a Senior Marine Scientist at O2 Marine, a boutique marine environmental and oceanographic consultancy based in Western Australia, and also serves as a Trainer and Coordinator for Reef Life Survey. In his role at O2 Marine, Paul has managed major biodiversity survey programs in the Red Sea and Arabian Gulf, diving with local teams throughout the region. He currently works across both temperate and tropical reef systems in Australia, overseeing and participating in coral and seagrass surveys, as well as leading Invasive Marine Pest monitoring using environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques.
Paul joined Reef Life Survey in 2008. Since then, he has coordinated and led reef monitoring across Western Australia and Southeast Asia and has taken part in surveys throughout Australia and the Mediterranean.
Paul is also the co-founder of WADDI (West Australian Divers for Diversity Inc.), a not‑for‑profit organisation that trains university marine science students and community volunteers to conduct seagrass health monitoring at Rottnest Island in Western Australia.
Paul Day will be an enrichment specialist on our Idyllic Raja Ampat & Cenderawasih Bay voyage, departing 5 October 2026.
Prof. Rick Stuart-Smith
Marine Biologist
Professor Rick Stuart-Smith is a marine biologist from Tasmania, Australia and a co-founder of the Reef Life Survey program (RLS). Through his work as a research fellow at the University of Tasmania since 2006, and through RLS since 2007, Rick has dived and undertaken biodiversity surveys of rocky and coral reefs all around the world – including recently in Antarctica through a partnership with Aurora Expeditions. He has also trained ~300 divers to undertake RLS surveys.
His research focuses on the ecology of reefs, seeking to understand how society and our efforts to improve management of the oceans are translating to observable changes underwater. A major motivation for his research is to improve the way marine biodiversity is monitored, reported, managed and protected, through contributing to more ecologically informed policy at larger scales, and guiding local management. He and colleagues have developed a global database of reef species and online field guides that are freely available for all (through www.reeflifesurvey.com).

This itinerary is a guide only and is subject to change due to weather, currents and tides, sea state and other conditions beyond our control. The final itinerary is also subject to pending regulatory and permitting approvals, which we hope to receive in mid-2026.
Fitness & mobility:
Most shore excursions involve boarding Zodiacs in swell and stepping ashore on beaches (wet landings). A good sense of balance and mobility is essential to safely embark/disembark. Indonesia is a tropical environment located along the equator. Expect heat, humidity, and conditions that can be tiring even for fit travellers. To participate in activities, passengers must often trek, manage heat, or enter the water from Zodiacs. Some shore excursions require very early starts.
Zodiacs:
On your voyage, there is a whole world of breathtaking wilderness to discover, and at Aurora Expeditions we pride ourselves on being able to bring you closer to some of the incredible scenery and wildlife that make the region so unique. Which is why we can take you one step further with our Zodiac cruises and landings. These inflatable boats are perfect for cruising around Indonesia, giving you the chance to see the world from a completely new point of view.

Do not book departure flights prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation, as we may experience delays at the conclusion of the voyage.
