Celebrating 35 years of Exploration to the Arctic, Antarctica and beyond.

Aurora Expeditions is a passionate, purpose-driven travel company founded by explorers with a deep respect for the planet’s most remote regions. For 35 years, we have led small-group expeditions that prioritize meaningful experiences, environmental protection, and connection to nature. Our purpose-built small ships allow us to travel responsibly and flexibly, spending more time ashore and adapting to natural conditions rather than rushing through destinations. With fewer guests and thoughtfully designed itineraries, every voyage fosters deeper understanding, personal discovery, and a lasting commitment to preserving the extraordinary places we explore.

And what better way to celebrate 35 years of exploration than with savings of up to 35% off* expeditions to Antarctica, the Arctic and Beyond.

A Different Kind of Expedition Company

Aurora Expeditions was born from a simple but powerful idea: that small groups, guided by experts, could explore wild places in a way that was more meaningful, flexible, and responsible. Founded in 1991 by adventurers Greg and Margaret Mortimer, the company was named in honour of Sir Douglas Mawson’s legendary ship, Aurora—a fitting tribute to Australia’s rich history of exploration.

From the beginning, Aurora was destined to be different. Rather than following rigid itineraries, the focus was on adaptability, curiosity, and deep connection with place. 35 years later, that pioneering spirit remains at the heart of every expedition.

Then, Now, and What Comes Next

More than three decades on, Aurora Expeditions continues to lead small groups to remote and breathtaking destinations across the globe—from the Antarctic Peninsula and the Arctic to Costa Rica and the rugged coastlines of the British Isles. Our activity program has expanded to include sea kayaking, polar snorkelling, scuba diving, alpine crossings, and even ice camping—experiences inspired by a true spirit of adventure.

Looking ahead, the recent arrival of our third ship, Douglas Mawson, marks an exciting new chapter. With increased capability and innovation, we remain committed to the same principles that have guided us for 35 years: curiosity, flexibility, and respect for the natural world.

35 Years, and Still Exploring

For 35 years, Aurora Expeditions has embraced the unexpected—pausing for breaching whales, discovering new landing sites, or adjusting plans to make the most of a rare wildlife encounter. Whether hiking across Arctic tundra in search of an arctic fox or Zodiac cruising alongside towering icebergs, every expedition is shaped by the moment.

Whether you are joining us for the first time or returning for another unforgettable journey, our original goals remain unchanged: to explore wild places that stir the soul, create ambassadors for the planet, and welcome new friends into the Aurora Expeditions family.

Here’s to 35 years of exploration—and to the adventures still to come.

Why Aurora

A True Spirit of Adventure

For over 33 years, Aurora Expeditions has been taking small groups of intrepid travellers to some of the most remote places on Earth. Our pioneering spirit means we embrace the unexpected—whether that’s stopping for breaching whales, exploring a new landing site, or adjusting our itinerary to make the most of a wildlife encounter.

No matter where we are, we encourage a true sense of exploration, from guided hikes across the tundra in search of an arctic fox to Zodiac cruising alongside towering icebergs.

Small Groups & Expert Guides

Traveling in small groups allows for a more immersive experience, ensuring every expeditioner can join landings, Zodiac cruises, and optional activities like kayaking or diving. With a staff-to-passenger ratio of approximately 1:7, you’ll enjoy more one-on-one time with our expert guides—many of whom are world leaders in their fields. Passionate about sharing their knowledge, our expedition specialists will enrich your journey with fascinating insights, bringing the landscapes, wildlife, and history of each destination to life.

A Welcoming Onboard Experience

From the moment you step aboard, our approachable expedition team and friendly atmosphere make you feel at home. Whether you’re swapping stories at the bar, dining in relaxed groups, or dashing to the deck in your pyjamas for a polar bear sighting, our small-ship camaraderie fosters a welcoming environment.

Solo travellers are also warmly welcomed—our stateroom-sharing service helps avoid single supplements, or you can take advantage of special offers for your own cabin.

More Value, More Freedom

Our expeditions include what most would consider extras—from a polar jacket and flights for our Fly/Sail Antarctic program to pre- and post-voyage accommodation in select locations.

We also offer flexibility, ensuring every trip is maximised for adventure. If weather or sea ice shifts our plans, we always have alternatives lined up, allowing you to make the most of your time in these extraordinary environments.
