Contingency Plans

Outbound Flights for Fly/Sail and Fly/Fly Voyages

For Fly/Sail and Fly/Fly voyages, where the expedition begins with a charter flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island, Aurora Expeditions may implement the following contingency plan if weather conditions affect flight operations.

We ask that expeditioners arrive in Punta Arenas no later than 2:00 pm on Day 1. This allows Aurora Expeditions to depart for King George Island on Day 1 instead of Day 2 if weather conditions permit as well as attendance at the required pre-flight briefing .

Aurora Expeditions will make every effort to operate the flight to Antarctica as soon as it is feasible to do so. Suitable weather conditions are required at both the departure and arrival locations. During any delay, expeditioners will receive regular updates and may be required to remain on standby in case a flight opportunity arises at short notice.

If delays occur during Days 2–4, Aurora Expeditions will provide hotel accommodation in Punta Arenas, full board meals, and where possible guided excursions while waiting for suitable conditions.

If authorisation to fly to Antarctica has not been granted by 06:00 AM on Day 4, the voyage will be cancelled. Aurora Expeditions program will end on Day 5 after breakfast.

Return Flights for Sail/Fly and Fly/Fly Voyages

At the end of the voyage, if the return charter flight from King George Island to Punta Arenas is delayed, expeditioners will remain onboard the vessel until the flight is authorised to depart. It is also a possibility that the flight will leave a day earlier. If this occurs, expeditioners will stay at accommodation with full board in Punta Arenas for an additional night, and enjoy a guided excursion.

If the flight cannot operate within 72 hours of the originally scheduled departure, the vessel will transport expeditioners to Puerto Williams for disembarkation. Full board will be provided onboard during this period.
