Experience the polar regions from an entirely new perspective as you snorkel in some of the most remote and pristine waters on Earth. From the icy coastlines of Antarctica to the wild, rugged shores of Scotland and Iceland, you’ll have the chance to witness incredible marine life and otherworldly underwater landscapes. Glide through crystal-clear waters past sculpted ice formations, observe agile penguins and curious seals, and spot fascinating creatures like crustaceans, starfish and nudibranchs beneath the surface.
With a longstanding tradition of pushing the boundaries, Aurora Expeditions launched our Antarctic snorkelling adventures in 2014. This unique experience will allow passengers to see both destinations in a completely new dimension, witnessing wildlife and scenery unlike any other place on earth.
What’s Involved
Passengers who take part will enjoy the opportunity to snorkel daily (weather dependent), taking delight in sheltered bays, offshore islands and secluded shipwrecks which make for spectacular wildlife viewing. This latest innovative activity option is led by our expert polar diving guides, and utilises state-of-the-art equipment including drysuits, gloves, hood, fins, mask, and snorkel. Passengers will be provided with all of the training and equipment they need to experience Antarctica, Scotland, Iceland or other more remote locations, from a truly unique angle.
What You’ll See
With space for up to 16 adventurous participants, this is your chance to explore the extraordinary world that lies just beneath the polar surface. Drifting through cold, clear waters, you may glimpse the underside of sculpted ice, encounter hardy marine life adapted to the chill, and watch creatures like seals and penguins glide effortlessly beneath the surface.
Led by our expert polar snorkel guides, each with over 20 years of experience, every excursion is carefully planned and fully briefed to ensure your safety and enjoyment.
Outings typically last between 20 minutes and one hour, depending on the conditions, with a minimum of six participants needed to run the program.
Required Experience & Fitness
While it is an advantage to have previous snorkelling experience, complete beginners are welcome to participate. Our expert guides will provide all the necessary equipment, guidance and instructions needed to enjoy this activity. However, you must be a competent swimmer and have a good level of fitness to be able to climb out of the water onto the zodiac (via a ladder). Our guides reserve the right to suspend you from the activity if they assess your ability to swim as insufficient.
Weather Conditions
In the Antarctic Peninsula during summer, air temperatures are generally above freezing, ranging from -4°C to +5°C (24.8°F to 41°F), while water temperatures remain close to freezing and winds off the glaciers can affect conditions. All snorkelling is weather-dependent, requiring calm seas with minimal wind and current.
In temperate polar regions like Scotland and Iceland, air temperatures typically range between 9°C and 13°C (48°F to 55°F), with water temperatures around 12°C (53.6°F). As with all locations, tides, currents and weather patterns will influence the duration and timing of each snorkelling outing
What to Bring
Aurora Expeditions will provide drysuits, fins, masks, and snorkels for all snorkelling participants.
In addition to the general packing list, we recommend bringing thermal base layers for added comfort and warmth. This includes two pairs of heavy socks, thermal leggings or pants, a thermal base layer top, and a heavier mid-weight long-sleeved top.
For a full breakdown of recommended gear, please refer to the polar snorkelling flyer.
How to Book
Polar snorkelling is offered as an optional activity for an additional surcharge and includes expert guides, necessary permits, scheduled outings, and all essential equipment listed on this page.
