Day 2 – Lima

After breakfast at the hotel, your gastronomic tour begins by meeting Penélope Alzamora. Thanks to her foodie parents and a nanny who introduced her to traditional Peruvian gastronomy, Penélope became passionate about cooking. An alumni of Johnson and Wales´ College of Culinary Arts and former teacher at San Francisco´s Tante Marie cooking school, Penélope now lives in Barranco, Lima´s creative neighbourhood.

Penélope will show you around a typical Peruvian market, and as you sip some Pisco Sours and prepare your own ceviche and other Peruvian trademark dishes, she will masterfully guide you through certain aspects of Peruvian history, best explained and experienced through its cuisine.

Dine at Amaz Restaurant this evening, where you will a enjoy the flavours of the Peruvian Amazon. (B,L,D)

Day 3 – Lima

Today’s excursion begins with a tour of the city’s main avenues, boulevards, and squares, starting with an exploration of Colonial Lima. The first stop is at the Main Square, where you will explore the plaza on foot and admire the exteriors of the Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima, and the City Hall, examples of Lima’s colonial architectural opulence.

You will then make your way to Santo Domingo convent, a religious and architectural gem that houses holy paintings, images, and relics of Peruvian saints, as well as written accounts of the endeavours of the Dominican Order across the country. Afterwards, you will visit Casa Aliaga, a colonial mansion that currently holds the distinction of being the oldest, continuously inhabited private residence in the Southern Hemisphere.

Finally, you’ll visit San Isidro, one of Lima’s hippest districts, the city’s financial hub and also home to ancient Huaca Huallamarca. Jutting out between the skyrise buildings, this pre-Inca archaeological site is a sensational adobe structure, from around 200 AD. As you drive to Barranco, Lima’s creative hub, enjoy the wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and elegant Miraflores District on the other. Look out for the quirky streets, Republican-style houses, Parque Central, Old Library, Bajada de los Baños, and Bridge of Sighs, all of which provided a source of inspiration for Chabuca Granda, one of Peru’s most famous composers.

Rest for a well-deserved seafood lunch at Cala Restaurant. After lunch, return to your hotel for free time. This evening, dinner will be at Chifa Royal Restaurant, where you will taste Chinese cuisine with a Peruvian twist. (B,L,D)
