Gillian Hovell

'The Muddy Archaeologist'

After graduating in Latin & Ancient History from Exeter University in 1983, Gillian spent several years working in BBC Television on everything from the Domesday Project, Children’s Programmes, to Drama & Science series. After moving to North Yorkshire, she dedicated her time to archaeology, diving into teaching Latin and Classical History, community archaeology projects, writing books and articles, or presenting online, in the media and on cruises. Gillian’s life passion is to demystify the past. She loves to show expeditioners that history and archaeology is all around us, demonstrating how our everyday lives use classical echoes all the time, often without even realising it. To Gillian, it’s a privilege to be at the cutting edge of unearthing and sharing muddy history, earning her the renowned title ‘The Muddy Archaeologist’.

Join Gillian on the Jewels of the Arctic (GRN042G) Expedition, departing 2 August 2023.
