Tell us about yourself and your connection to Aurora Expeditions
I'm a surveyor by trade. The maritime wilderness areas of Canada’s Northwest Coast convinced me showing and sharing beautiful places was far more fulfilling. Fast forward 18 years with 8 of those years also spent on ships in polar regions, I ended up back in Australia.
The small ship and passionate long standing team at Aurora was the perfect fit to continue sharing my passion with like minded individuals.
What's a moment with Aurora that has stayed with you?
Christmas Day in about 2018 on Polar Pioneer when we were surrounded by orcas in clear, calm, sunny weather.
When did you feel most proud to be part of this journey?
When you welcome back returning passengers and are able to give them yet another life changing experience.
Why do you think responsible travel matters now more than ever?
As consumption grows around the world, industries like ours are going to be scrutinised and looked at as being excessive. We need to prove that we can act in a way that will benefit the places we visit.
What role do you believe Aurora plays in protecting the places we visit?
Educating passengers about the impacts on these places and being one of the leaders in the industry to reduce our impact by trying new technologies.
What do you hope Aurora continues to stand for in the next 35 years?
I would like to see Aurora continue to take people to just beyond their comfort level and not lose that feeling of exploration both with passengers and the use of new ideas to reduce our footprint.
In one sentence: what does Aurora mean to you?
Like the name itself I think Aurora has always embraced the shimmering light of the unexpected. Steering clear of cookie cutter schedules, you never know what will shine next on expedition.
