Day 2 – Oslo
After breakfast at the hotel, meet your local guide at the hotel lobby to start your discovery of Oslo. Take a short stroll to the bustling area of Aker Brygge, where you will join a local boat to sail across Pipervika, an arm of the Oslo Fjord, where you will reach the Bygdøy Peninsula. On Bygdøy, you will find the Viking Ship Museum housing three of the best-preserved Viking ships in the world. The three Viking ships were all ocean vessels prior to being used in burial rituals for their wealthy owners. In the burial mounds, archaeologists unearthed skeletons, wood carved handicrafts and other artefacts in excellent condition from the fascinating world of the Vikings which you will also find exhibited at the museum.
Continue to Fram Museum and learn more about the Norwegian explorers’ polar expeditions to some of the coldest and most dangerous places on Earth, the Arctic and Antarctic. The museum houses the Polar ship Fram, a vessel that has been used for three important expeditions; over the Arctic Ocean (1893-1896), to the arctic archipelago west of Greenland (1898-1902) as well as Roald Amundsen’s journey to Antarctica for his South Pole expedition in 1910.
In addition to the Fram ship, the museum also houses the polar ship, Gjøa, which is the first ship to have sailed through the Northwest Passage as well as an exhibition about the ship. The museum also exhibits images of the fauna of the polar regions, such as polar bears and penguins.
Return to the city by boat and enjoy free time for lunch at Aker Brygge.
After lunch, rejoin your guide and enjoy the inner parts of the city by foot. Visit the City Hall, pass by the Royal Palace, Parliament and the National Theatre. Meet your driver and continue to Frogner and the Vigeland Sculpture Park. The park is filled with over 200 sculptures in stone and bronze, portraying human life and is a must see in Oslo. Continue to the Holmenkollen ski jump for a photo stop, before returning to your hotel, where the remainder of the day is at leisure.
