Days 1 & 2 – Sea Lion Island
Arriving at Mount Pleasant Airport you will be met by your International Tours & Travel advisor. Your travel advisor will assist with your transfer by Falkland Islands Government Air Service (FIGAS) 8- seater Britten Norman Islander to Sea Lion Island with a flight time of approx 25 minutes. The flight provides exceptional views of the Falklands coastline and scenery. Your accommodation is at Sea Lion Lodge and is just minutes walk from a wide variety of wildlife.
This is one of the smallest islands in the Falklands and the most southerly inhabited island. The sheer abundance of wildlife in such a small area makes it a must on any Falklands itinerary. An introductory tour by 4X4 vehicle will show you areas of interest with everything in easy walking distance of the lodge. The internationally endangered Striated Caracara, Antarctic Skuas and Southern Giant Petrel can all be seen. Not to be missed are the Southern Sea Lions and Elephant Seals which bask on the white sandy beaches. Gentoo penguins nest close enough to be seen and heard from the lodge bar! Keep an eye open for Killer Whales off the coast!
Overnight: Sea Lion Lodge (B/L/D)
Days 3 & 4 – Pebble Island
Today’s FIGAS flight will take you to Pebble Island, with landscapes varying from large ponds to vast sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. This diversity offers shelter to a wide-ranging population of wildlife. Thousands of Gentoo, Rockhopper and Magellanic Penguins breed each summer along with
Southern Sea Lions. The ponds on the east of the island, many within walking distance of the lodge, are home to Chiloe Wigeon, Grebes, Black-necked Swans and a multitude waterfowl. Your half-day and full day guided tours are tailored to your interests and offer ample opportunity to see the abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery further afield. Pebble Island also has something for the historian having played an important role in the 1982 conflict. Pebble Lodge, previously the farm manager’s house, is ideally adapted to the needs of visitors while retaining the warm and friendly atmosphere of a large farmhouse.
Overnight: Pebble Lodge (B/L/D)
Days 5 & 6 – Saunders Island
On arrival you will travel overland to the wildlife hotspot know as The Rookery – a drive of about 40 minutes. Rookery Inn is an isolated fully equipped two bedroom self-catering cottage located on the cliff top with magnificent views of the islands along the north of West Falkland. This 30,000 acre island is the site of the first British settlement in 1765. The attraction to wildlife enthusiasts is the Black-browed Albatross colony which stretches along the north coast. This is one of the Falklands best wildlife sites with Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic penguins as well as the albatross right at your doorstep. To allow you not to waste a moment our highly recommended pre-prepared home-made meals are provided.
Overnight: Self-catered accommodation at Rookery Inn (home-made meal packs provided)
Day 7 – Stanley
Today your FIGAS transfer takes you to Stanley where your guide will meet you for a full-day guided excursion to Volunteer Point, the white sand beach and turquoise waters make for a spectacular backdrop to the largest breeding colony of King Penguins in the Falklands. There is a host of other wildlife to be seen, as well as spectacular scenery en-route.
